About The Role

As an experienced veterinary technician, you will provide laboratory services and veterinary care to the animal populations   at Atlantis Dubai and work to ensure the highest quality of clinical and diagnostic support. Atlantis Dubai is home to a population of 31 Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins, 4 South African fur seals and about 65,000 marine and freshwater fish. The technical support you will provide will include Dolphin Bay, Lost chambers Aquarium, Atlantis The Royal Aquarium, and satellite facilities. In this role, you will join a team of two veterinarians and three water quality technicians. Atlantis Dubai is an AZA accredited institution. This position is a full-time position reporting directly to the veterinarians. Half of the working time consists of clinical biology activity (diagnostic laboratory work).

 Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proficiently process blood and other diagnostic samples from mammals and fish. Perform clinical laboratory procedures, including performing cytologic examination, manual CBC techniques, microbiologic cultures (aerobic, anaerobic and fungus), and using chemical analyzers and spectrophotometer for ELISA. Processing samples to ship to outside labs.
  • Proficiently operate, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment, including hematologic and chemical analyzers, endoscopy, ultrasound, radiology, sterilization, spectrophotometer.
  • Formulate, prepare and dispense medication as ordered by veterinarians, and administer treatment to hospitalized animals and other patients. Perform pharmaceutical and supplies inventories on a regular basis to restock as needed.
  • Assist veterinarians during medical procedures, including set up and use of equipment.
  • Assist veterinarians during necropsy procedures, including set up and use of equipment. Perform post mortem samples when veterinarians are unavailable.
  • Proficiency in providing basic diagnostic and post mortem sampling, procedural support to patients, emergency nursing skills, fish anesthetic management and monitoring.
  • Work with husbandry staff on behavior training of animals for medical procedures.
  • Assist veterinarians during research and special projects. Participate in team special projects and actively participate in accomplishing goals and initiatives set by the Animal Health and Science team.
  • Support animal wellness/wellbeing programs through preventive medicine, diagnostic procedures, & promotion of animal welfare.

About You

  • Certified Laboratory or Veterinary Technician.
  • Minimum three years of experience in diagnostic laboratory practice, or domestic animal veterinary practice, or research laboratory practice. Previous experience in wild animal is NOT compulsory. Maintain a positive tone in a highly changing environment. 
  • Excellent organizational skills. Flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays. The position may include occasional on-call responsibilities.
  • Keep workspaces perfectly tidy.
  • Provide rigorous, detail oriented, well-organized work.
  • Certified Laboratory or Veterinary Technician, or master’s degree in laboratory work. Level corresponding to 2 to 4 years of university study.
