About The Role
- Maintains a safe, clean, hygienic, and tidy environment.
- Conducts marine educational programs for guests creating enjoyable experiences by sharing in depth knowledge of marine life and our operations.
- Makes daily observations of animals, actively contributes toward diagnosis, treatment, and corrective procedures.
- Maintains animal records and departmental logbooks accurately.
- Maintains aquarium exhibits and cultures in accordance with routine and preventative maintenance programs.
- Must be available to perform all reasonable duties for any shift necessary to receive, care for and observe the animals, regardless of time, day, or location.
- Maintains a sound knowledge of the Company’s facilities and related services, and adhere to SOP’s and department manuals.
- Maintains the department standard of necessary physical condition as needed to perform all aspects of the job safely.
- Develops a professional approach to the career and function as a colleague showing consideration, tolerance, cooperation, reliability, and the ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Assists and can perform necropsy procedures as needed.
- Assists in animal acquisitions, dispositions, and receives local and imported animal collections.
- Carries out processes in introducing new species, habitats, theming, and systems following enrichment and welfare assessments and standards.
- Proactively informs, promotes, and delivers Marine Animal Adventures as an extension of the Lost Chambers Aquarium experience to guests.
- Performs necessary water quality tests and analysis, discerns results, reports any abnormal results, and contributes to the corrective action.
- Carries out consistent successful cultures and supplements as a food source for invertebrates and larval fish.
- Regularly assesses dietary needs of all animals in the collection, recommending nutritional adjustments accordingly, and maintains the records in accordance with enrichment and wellbeing standards of animals’ stock and size levels.
- Participates in scientific advancement projects through data collection, documentation, and presentation to the team.
- Maintains Inventory of supplies and equipment to par levels and involved in procurement process.
- Composes reports, email communications and accurate logs for all aquarium operations related to area of responsibility including LSS, animals, educational programs.
- Mentors Aquarists and shows leadership skills when carrying out major tasks or projects.
About You
- PADI Rescue Scuba Certification or equivalent.
- Can communicate in a clear and professional manner, proficient in written and spoken English.
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Biology, Zoology, Marine Science, or related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in an Aquarist role.
- Proficient computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft package and composing reports.
- Experience in quarantining animals, applying treatment, and conducting animal transport.
- Experience in working independently and in a team.
- Experience in overseeing Saltwater and Fresh water Life Support Systems.
- Experience in animal record keeping, recording, and uploading data to online systems (OERCA/ZIMS).
- Experience in conducting behavioural, enrichment and welfare assessments.
- Completion of the E-Quarist course certification for basic Aquarist knowledge.
- Must be able to make informed decisions regarding assigned area of responsibility.
- Has worked for a zoological organization that is accredited by a regional association.
