First Assistant Golf Course Superintendent 

About the Job 

The First Assistant Golf Course Superintendent plays a key leadership role in the daily operation and maintenance of the golf course. Reporting directly to the Golf Course Superintendent, this position assists in planning, coordinating, and executing all agronomic and maintenance programs to ensure the golf course consistently meets high standards of playability, aesthetics, and safety. 
The First Assistant is heavily involved in hands-on field operations, staff leadership, irrigation management, and chemical applications, and assumes full operational responsibility in the Superintendent’s absence.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and cart paths. 

  • Lead daily golf course operations and oversee staff performance to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and to standard. 

  • Prepare and manage daily work schedules, assigning tasks and ensuring proper and safe use of equipment. 

  • Train, coach, and mentor equipment operators in the operation, care, and maintenance of turf equipment and machinery. 

  • Supervise and perform pesticide, fertilizer, and foliar applications, including proper calibration and safe handling of equipment. 

  • Maintain accurate application records in compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements. 

  • Oversee inventory management of fertilizers, chemicals, parts, and maintenance supplies. 

  • Participate in the development, monitoring, and control of the annual department budget. 

  • Monitor and adjust daily irrigation schedules, ensuring optimal turf health and efficient water use. 

  • Supervise and assist in the operation and maintenance of pump stations, irrigation, and drainage systems. 

  • Support staff administration including hiring input, training, performance evaluations, safety programs, and discipline. 

  • Conduct daily morning meetings (lineups) with the maintenance team to communicate priorities, safety topics, and course conditions. 

  • Prepare and submit daily operational reports, documenting completed work, outstanding items, and follow-up needs. 

  • Track and manage project lists and continuous improvement initiatives for the golf course. 

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance and storm preparedness plans. 

  • Act as the primary point of contact and decision-maker for golf course operations in the absence of the Superintendent. 

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent. 

 

Requirements 

  • Degree or technical certification in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field (preferred). 

Minimum 3–5 years of experience in golf course maintenance, with at least 1–2 years in an assistant or leadership role. 

Strong knowledge of: 

Golf course turf management and agronomic programs 

Irrigation systems, pump stations, and drainage 

Safe application and handling of pesticides and fertilizers 

Golf course maintenance equipment and machinery 

Experience leading and supervising maintenance teams. 

Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and tournament schedules. 

Relevant licenses or certifications for chemical application and turf management are highly desirable.
